As a society we have become cynical and jaded when it comes to our news and it’s no different in the climbing world. We continually hear stories about the first “this” ascent and the first “that” ascent of standard trade routes or mountains and quickly dismiss them as irrelevant. Because it’s a trade route that can see as much traffic as an LA freeway, of course anyone can do it. So who cares? What seems to be lost though is that climbing is and always will be about individuals pushing themselves to overcome nature’s obstacles regardless of whether it is a trade route or not. It’s a trade route for a reason. What is easy for one can be impossible for another, so when they finally accomplish their goal it is an important ascent. Who are we to dismiss it?
This summer Jan “Honza” Riha came to Yosemite from the Czech Republic. His goal was the same as thousands of other climbers, to climb El Capitan by the Nose Route. What set his ascent apart from masses is the fact that Jan is completely blind. With the help of two friends, Jan was able to complete this goal over 4 days. For us, his ascent of the Nose was just as important as all the publicized 5-hard ascents done in the Valley this year. Here is a guy who ignored everyone who said he could not do it, or said, “it’s just another gumby being hauled up a wall” and just did it because he loves to climb.
Here at Liberty Mountain we have not forgotten what climbing is all about. From “pebble wrestling” to “widget climbing” to even “snow slogging” we get out and test our gear. Yes, it’s a part of the job, but we really do it because we love climbing regardless of the grade or whether it’s a trade route.
Check out the following pages and you will see not only the most diverse selection of climbing gear available, but also the people selling it.
We climb for the love. How about you?
